Korean food has always been my place of refuge and was a crucial activator in drawing participation without instruction in this performance. The 평상 pyeongsang (platform) and the food together played as core facilitators. People gathered around and rested on the 평상 pyeongsang to connect and interact while they ate 김밥 kimbap- some for the first time. kimbap heaven allowed the public to share space and experience a mode of hospitality not ordinarily present in an art venue.
The pyeongsang, in this context, symbolized quiet defiance while providing a place of comfort. The kimbap invited participants to experience a radical form of welcome.
